Is Turkey Really Making You Sleepy?
Posted on 2008 under Articles, Holiday, Main Dish | No Comment
Everybody likes to blame their sleepy mood after Thanksgiving dinner on the effects of Tryptophan. Tryptophan is a widely known amino acid in turkey that promotes the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that’s involved in sleep and feelings of calmness.
However, you can quit placing all the blame on the turkey for your sleepiness and move it on over to your big appetite. Everybody uses the holidays as an excuse to add more sweet potatoes and stuffing to their plate, and this reason is much more likely an explanation to being sleepy than turkey.
There is nowhere near enough tryptophan in turkey to actually make you sleepy because in order for tryptophan to make you sleepy it needs to be taken on a empty stomach without protein. The sleepy feeling you are experiencing is due to eating way too much and drinking alcohol.
