As you may already know, one of PHILLY’s plants in Lowville, New York has undergone some positive and much greener changes. Besides installing anaerobic digesters to convert waste stream into methane gas, they have also gave its interior lighting a green makeover.
In early 2008, the Lowville plant replaced its interior lights with T-8 lighting fixtures. T-8 lighting is more energy efficient and still has the power to accomplish typical day-to-day activities. Besides trimming the electric bill, this simple change at the facility will result in a reduction of 1,350,068 KWH (kilowatt-hour). That is enough electricity to light 2,164 homes for a year!
Here are just a few examples of what you can do to conserve electricity from your lights at home:
• Replace incandescent bulbs with screw-in fluorescent bulbs, which use 75 percent less electricity and last at least 8 times longer
• Turn lights off when not needed
• Install light dimmers or photoelectric switches that automatically turn off lights during daylight or install timers to control use of lights
• For lights used for home security, install motion detectors so lights come on only when motion is detected
